farmstrAs a city dweller I love visiting local farms. It’s a rare treat for me to touch the dirt, smell the animals, meet the people and see up close the natural process that creates my food. Anytime the barriers fall between the food creator and my stomach I get excited. But I never have time to get the local farmer’s market let alone get out to a farm.

Meeting the farmer is the ultimate in seeing where your food comes from. A Seattle based startup called Farmstr.com is helping city dwellers like me meet local farmer while shopping for good local meats and produce. Farmstr is an online marketplace where you can select exactly the local food from local farms you want and buy it online. Then you arrange a pick up time for the food with the farmer.

Transparency in our food chain is important. This is one reason local food is attractive to so many people who care about the food they put in their mouth. It’s why people want to know if their food contains GMO’s. It’s why we love going to the local Farmer’s Market.

No only does Farmstr help hungry shoppers buy yummy food but they also help local, sustainable farmers by giving them better control over inventory because the farmer knows what they have sold before they load the truck for the meet up. Since the farmer is selling directly to you the prices are lower than what you pay at the grocery store and the farmer gets a better profit margin on the sale. Farmstr takes a cut of each online sale. It’s a win for everyone.

Go check out the selection at Farmstr.com. Right now they have fresh eggs, grass fed beef, organic pears, brussel sprouts, jalapeños and sugar pie pumpkins. If you are planning your thanksgiving menu this is a great place to shop. But hurry, the Heritage Turkeys have already sold out.
